Member Spotlight: Meet Carinda Palmer

We’re thrilled to spotlight Carinda Palmer, a Play Like a Girl alumni who recently completed the Executive Fighter boxing program.

Her journey brought new challenges, growth, and unforgettable moments as she stepped out of her comfort zone and into the ring.

What inspired you to join the Executive Fighter boxing program, and how did you feel about stepping into the ring for the first time?

"I received an email from the Executive Fighter team during the Olympics, and with all the inspiration from our incredible Australian athletes, I thought, why not challenge myself with a new sport?

Although I was excited, I have to admit, stepping into the ring for the first time was nerve-wracking—not the training, but the idea of actually fighting."

What were the biggest challenges you faced throughout the 8-week training program, both physically and mentally?

"The program shook up my usual routine significantly, especially as a working mum. Training three nights a week after work meant I missed dinners and bedtime with my kids, but thankfully, my supportive husband stepped up.

Training was intense; sometimes, I’d come home barely able to lift my arms. Being the only female boxer in our group was initially uncomfortable, and getting punched in the face for the first time was quite unsettling.
But I’m competitive, so I knuckled down to be at my best for the fight."

Can you share a memorable moment or breakthrough that boosted your confidence in the ring?

"Training with the guys, I initially felt out of place as the only female, but they pushed me to new limits. When we sparred, they didn’t hold back, and keeping up with them gave me a real confidence boost."

You mentioned stepping out of your comfort zone—what did that look like for you, and how did you push through those moments of discomfort?

"Boxing involves getting punched, and part of training was being a 'human punching bag' for conditioning. I wasn’t thrilled about it, but I knew it came with the territory. Once I commit to something, I see it through, and that’s a principle I carry in both sports and life. My determination to complete the 8-week program kept me going."

Having completed the fight, what were your thoughts and emotions when you heard the final bell ring after those intense rounds?

"Relief and jubilation flooded over me, but I was also physically exhausted to the point of feeling sick—it was the hardest I’ve pushed my body, apart from giving birth!"

What has this experience taught you about yourself, and how do you think it will influence other areas of your life?

"Looking back, I’m proud of myself for seeing it through. The experience taught me the importance of incorporating challenges into life and jumping outside my comfort zone. It’s how we grow, and I feel stronger for it."

What advice would you give to someone considering taking on a similar challenge?

"If you have a good fitness base, boxing will be easier—and be prepared to get punched! Otherwise, go for it, enjoy the journey, and appreciate the muscle definition you’ll gain in your arms!"

We’re incredibly proud of you for completing this challenge and stepping out of your comfort zone!
