Member Spotlight: Meet Evie Kennedy

Evie Kennedy is a passionate athlete and coach with a love for both basketball and Olympic Weightlifting.

We are thrilled to feature Evie Kennedy in this edition of the Play Like a Girl Member Spotlight. Evie’s story is a testament to passion, perseverance, and leadership.

From her childhood love of basketball to her journey into Olympic Weightlifting and coaching, Evie has always embraced sport as a way to build strength—both physically and mentally.

We are proud to share her journey, especially after her valuable participation in the Empowered to Lead course.

A Lifelong Passion for Sport
Evie’s love for sport started early. "My siblings and I grew up swimming, playing tackle footy on the front lawn—lots of tears!—and playing tennis," she shares. "My parents were pretty sporty, and we were hyper kids, so sport has always been part of our lives."

Her first true love, however, was basketball. "I remember the day I was selected to play for Glebe’s representative team in Sydney—I was 10 years old, and I wore that uniform so proudly. I think I still have the training jersey in my closet!" Basketball gave Evie a sense of confidence and belonging, and even now, picking up a basketball reignites that same fire inside her. "It gave the awkward little girl I was the confidence to chase that feeling of being on the court," she says.

After a hiatus from sports to focus on study and travel, Evie discovered Olympic Weightlifting at age 24. "I found my second true love." Seven years later, Evie is a coach at Atletika Weightlifting, guiding others in the sport. "As a coach and athlete, I believe the joys and benefits of being strong, powerful, and fast are for everyone."

Building Community Through Coaching
Evie’s philosophy as a coach is rooted in inclusivity and community. "Creating sporting communities built on care, inclusivity, and mental health awareness is central to my passion for sport." She believes that sport has the power to combat loneliness and help manage physical and mental health conditions. "Sporting communities can truly make the world a healthier place."

Fondest Memories in Sport

Evie’s love for sport extends beyond her personal achievements—many of her fondest memories are tied to her athletes’ successes. "I’ve watched lifters hit personal bests, overcome their fears, and grow through the sport of weightlifting," she reflects. Taking lifters to the AWF Master’s Nationals and representing NSW was one of her coaching highlights this year.

As an athlete, becoming the NSW State Champion in Weightlifting was a standout moment for her. "I had such a fun time competing, and I’m lucky to be surrounded by great coaches, friends, and an amazing lifting crew."

The Empowered to Lead Journey
Becoming a coach also meant stepping into a leadership role, and Evie joined the Empowered to Lead course to develop her leadership skills. "I was excited about learning more about leading through sport and connecting with like-minded women," she says.

The course helped Evie gain confidence in her leadership abilities and provided valuable insights into leadership. "The candid conversations with other women on their personal journeys in sport and life were invaluable," she recalls.

A Lasting Impact
One of the most impactful moments for Evie came during the final weekly huddle, where participants shared their personal vision boards. "It was one of the most supportive and inspiring experiences I’ve ever had in a leadership course," she says. Hearing the dreams and goals of women from all different backgrounds and sports was incredibly moving for her.

Advice for Women in Sport and Leadership

When asked what advice she’d give to other women aspiring to excel in sports and leadership, Evie’s response is powerful: "Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong or that you can’t do something. The magic happens when you choose hope and self-belief over fear."

What It Means to Play Like a Girl
"For me, to play like a girl means being strong, powerful, fast, fierce, and an absolute force."

The Importance of Play Like a Girl
Evie recognises that women and girls face systemic challenges in both sport and leadership. "Even if you put aside the social and cultural constraints, it’s hard to step into leadership roles and own them," she explains. Initiatives like Play Like a Girl are crucial because they equip women with the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate their leadership journeys with clarity.

A Vision for the Future
When asked what she hopes to see change in the world, Evie focuses on representation and decision-making. "Currently, only 9% of elite coaching positions are held by women, and only a quarter of sporting board roles. The world would be better if more diverse women were in positions to truly change old systems and ways of thinking."

Thank you, Evie, for being a part of our community and for sharing your incredible journey. We are inspired by your passion, and we look forward to seeing where your leadership takes you next!
