Camryn Harland: From Play Like a Girl to School House Captain

We’d like to extend a huge congratulations to Camryn Harland on becoming school house captain! Her journey to this leadership role has been nothing short of inspiring, and the skills she gained through the Play Like a Girl leadership program have played a pivotal role in her success.

Camryn’s story is one of perseverance, growth, and community spirit. From participating in competitive sports to taking on leadership responsibilities, she has embraced every challenge with confidence. Now, she’s ready to make a lasting impact on her school.

Her Path to Leadership

"The leadership process at our school is quite complex," Camryn explains. "We had to complete tasks around the school and in the community to build a portfolio.

That was just the start!" Each applicant was also required to write an application letter outlining their leadership skills, followed by a community interview. "I chose to interview Holly from Play Like a Girl because of my participation in the program and the knowledge she shared. It was such a valuable experience," she says with pride.

The final stage of the process involved a two-day leadership camp where the group voted on leadership roles. "It was long and tough, but it made sure the best leaders were selected," Camryn recalls.

Facing the Biggest Challenge

For Camryn, the interview process was the most daunting part. "I was really nervous about how I’d handle the environment with the teachers and the questions they’d ask," she admits. To overcome this, she made sure to prepare thoroughly. "I practised a lot and made short notes about things I wanted to address. That gave me a good foundation to work with."

Her preparation paid off. With each question, Camryn felt more at ease, drawing on her leadership experiences and the lessons she’d learned from Play Like a Girl. "It helped me feel confident, even when I was a little unsure of myself."

Authenticity at the Core of Leadership

Now, as the newly appointed school house captain, Camryn is ready to bring her own style of leadership to the role. "For me, being authentic is the most important quality. I want to bring to the role what I’ve always wanted to see in a leader—someone passionate and encouraging."

Creating a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable to participate is central to Camryn’s vision. "I want to help others feel confident, whether that’s in sports, school activities, or just being themselves," she says.

How Play Like a Girl Made a Difference

The Play Like a Girl leadership program has been instrumental in shaping Camryn’s leadership journey. "It taught me that leadership comes in different forms, and recognising those differences helps build a stronger team," she explains. The program also helped her build confidence in her own abilities. "I walked away with practical tools and a clearer understanding of what kind of leader I want to be."

One of the key moments that left a lasting impact on Camryn was the final session of the course, where participants shared their personal vision boards. "That was such an inspiring moment. We were all from different backgrounds, but hearing everyone’s dreams and goals was so powerful."

Looking to the Future

As house captain, Camryn hopes to leave a lasting mark on her school community. "I want to encourage students to get involved in all the activities the school offers, and to do so with passion and excitement," she says. But beyond participation, her true goal is to inspire others to find their own leadership potential. "If I can help someone believe in themselves and their abilities, then I’ll know I’ve made a difference."

Reflecting on her journey so far, Camryn offers this advice to girls and women aspiring to leadership: "Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong or that you can’t do something. The magic happens when you choose self-belief over fear."

A Bright Future Ahead

Camryn Harland’s leadership journey is a testament to what young women can achieve when they embrace their potential. With her authenticity, passion, and the skills she’s gained through Play Like a Girl, there’s no doubt that Camryn will continue to inspire and lead others for years to come.
